Adding ram will greatly help in many situations including (IMO) extending the life of your harddrive. As mentioned by icecool83 your hard disk will work a lot less. I have 320 megs and I can play Team Fortress Classic online and my hard drive will actually go into sleep mode.
I would suggest booting into Safe Mode and inspecting Device Manager. Items that do not show in normal Device Manager will sometimes be present in Safe Mode as history items.
