Uhm, Please, correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't this actually say SFA about AMD's thermal protection? I thought the situation was that the thermal management could deal with STEADY increases in temperature - such as a low-quality heatsink or a failing/failed fan? Whereas sudden phenomenal...

several qualms

He is right though, unless your PSU has a physical switch on the back of it - it's always going to be supplying 3.3v to the mainboard while the power cord is in. That's how the switch works, after all. However - if im not mistaken there's nothing saying that the power point has to be turned on...

SCSI fuc*ing sucks a$$ - no wonder it costs too much...

Actually, if you add the IDE drive later, it WONT be recognized as C, as XP doesn't give a cr4p about interface priority like DOS. If you install XP on the standalone SCSI drive, that will remain drive C, no matter what you add later. NT-based OS's dont look at drive by letter but by ARC path...

Looks like we can forget getting a hammer anytime soon. Unless you got a spare $1000.

Anyone comparing a K6-x to a PII really outta take into account the FPU performance...or lack of it... Im not gonna bother going further into the argument than that ;) Just my .02 Ph0.

If he can create a partition, access it, copy files to it, and start windows setup from it - i'd HIGHLY doubt that it's CMOS fixed disk config that is the problem... ;)

Win95a, perhaps? I can only take a guess and say you may be attempting to install 95a, and your partition is FAT32. This would make the disk unrecognizable to setup... try creating a partition without saying yes to large disk support - or try a newer version of win95, if you have access to...

Laptop battery usage question.. please read!

Tru, 133 isn't. Industry Standard 100mhz SODIMMS are, however. To answer your question w/ regard to memory detection - as a general rule if it's not going to work correctly it wont even show the extra. But because architecturally the PC100 and PC133 modules are quite similar - it may be that...

Ram Drive = Memory as Harddrive

Whitedog; Thats what I was about to say. The paging file is there for when your system is LOW on physical memory - so assigning some of your physical memory to be a swapfile is nothing short of completely counter-productive. I have 768mb of memory - and as yet my system hasn't ever touched...

I know a computer shop that tells me the ECS K7S5A motherboard is junk. (they claim 30% return rate)..what do you think?

This is probably the only thing I disagree with in the thread; and even then not wholeheartedly. When I was last building my system, fair enough if i'd hit any problems I would have attempted to fault-find, but that was @ home, late at night. But, building systems for a living - if system #10...
