The longest shot I've ever made was about 250 yards while deer hunting. I wish I had enough land to do some longer range stuff. I can do about 150 on some land I own, and that's pushing it. The terrain is just too uneven to go much farther.
NO one can tell you what will fit you. We can give you a list of things to try but that's about it. I personally carry a Ruger SR9C in the summer and a Taurus 1911DT in the winter. I have carried Springfields, Glocks, M & P's etc.. They each have there strong and weak points. Ask yourself these...
I don't own one but I have shot a few different models of the MK III. They were all awesome. Plus anytime I hear "Ruger" and ".22" in the same sentence it makes my pee pee stick out.

1. With a shotgun the recoil is HEAVILY dependent on the load. If you are more familiar with pistols you may not appreciate how much difference a different load can change felt recoil. Commercial pistol ammo of different weights doesn't drastically change felt...
As Pontifex pointed out you can get a combo pack that would do both your requirements nicely. I shoot clays quite a bit with my Mossberg 500 which is comparable to a Remington 870. Remington and Mossberg are kinda like Ford and Chevy, different strokes for different folks.

Please let me know where these superhuman instructors are that can take a person that has never seen a gun and have them hitting paper with 95% at a distance most shooters don't even bother practicing at.
