Did you remember to plug in the extra 12V connector? It has four pins. Is there an extra power connector on the video card that is needed? Otherwise, try resetting the CMOS?
Alright, I removed the JMicron driver and replaced it with the Standard IDE controller driver. The other CD-ROM has now appeared again. And still, the burst transfer rate is about 27.7MB/sec, which is adequate for 18x-20x DVD burning.
I've installed Windows 2000, and then installed all the drivers off the CD (using the InstALL thing) and what happened is that one of the two CD-ROM drives that were connected to the lone IDE connector on the board have disappeared. When booting up, the JMicron BIOS still sees the two CD-ROM...
Just as an update to my previous problems, it turns out it was the CPU's fault. Despite the E4300 sitting at 37C in the BIOS (reading taken from an Asus P5B, not the DS3). It was giving me OS installation problems on both the DS3 and the P5B. Replacing the E4300 with an older Pentium D 805...

Have a look on eBay. You can probably find a 36GB MAS for $35 and a MAU for $50.
The MAS series is quite fast, but the MAU will blow away many of the drives StorageReview has looked at, in some cases, even the newest Raptors. This assumes you have a controller that can handle at least 80 MB/sec.
My experience with one of those cheap $30 Airlink USB to wifi adapters is that they may drop the connection once or twice a day even if the signal quality's good. If you're using them in a machine with USB 1.1 ports, they'll rob your bus of some bandwidth... as example, a high end U160 SCSI hard...
