Windows 7: not very good so far

Sure they are. Just shift-click or middle click (with a three-button mouse) and a new app window opens. It's the best of both worlds. PhreePhly

    Mail program for Win 7

You need to download the Windows Live Mail client from the web, it is not included in the Windows 7 installation. The reason for this hasn't been made very clear, some say it is due to pressures from the EU to de-couple certain programs from Windows, others just think that by having the Live...

For those that have Windows Vista now

Actually, No. Orb, right click Computer and choose properties. Really simple. Have you used the search features? Click the Orb and start typing what you are looking for. Example, power settings, click the orb and type pow.. with just those three letters a quicklist for options in control...

Things that still suck about Windows 7

Tell your Dad to click the Start Button and type "Add Program" and there should be an entry for add and remove programs. Win 7 does this better, as it actually adds a section for control panel in the search. PhreePhly

Win 7 RC with 2GB System RAM

I'm not sure I agree. If you only have 2 GB of RAM and don't plan on increasing that or can't due to hardware constraints, x86 is more efficient. PhreePhly

    WHS question

WHS backup is typically scheduled to occur during a time range. Mine is set for 1200 to 0400, however you can set any time period you want. I guess you could set it to have a schedule over a 24 hour period. PhreePhly

    WHS question

Really? Cool, I never noticed that. I am always asleep during the backups. PhreePhly

    WHS question

I have the same setup at home, I have 3 laptops and a desktop. The backup is scheduled for between 1200 and 0400. The client is set to wake any laptops. My laptop is set for hybrid sleep, and even if I am in the hibernate mode, it wakes up and backs up. The laptops are all setup wireless so...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

What don't you like about Live mail? I actually prefer it to the mail client in Vista. PhreePhly

Win 7 RC with 2GB System RAM

Given that you are using a E8400 processor, I'm assuming you're on a desktop and you can expand you RAM in the future. In that case, I would go with x64. I haven't encountered any real issues running an x64 OS in terms of drivers, but I've had fairly new hardware. If you have an old printer...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

I still find the Gui "smoother" than XP, but that is such a poor metric. I'll chalk that up to different strokes. UAC is nothing more than a notification service. It lets you know that a program is trying to perform an action reserved for the admins. I think that MS screwed up in offering a...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

Really? I find that the interface is far smoother than XP. There is more shadowing, transparencies, etc. Interesting observation. As far as UAC is concerned, I don't think you have a clear understanding of what it all about. And what do want in terms of burning. Windows 7 now burns isos...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

Well, I'll go there. What exactly is it that makes *nix more secure than windows? You made the assertion, so it's up to you to prove it. You do realize that the notion of "rootkits" comes from the *nix world. All *nixes have to be patched to maintain security. The simple fact has to do...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

To be fair, I think OSX is upto 8% or 9% in the US and 3% world-wide. However, the functional differences between the Vista/Win 7 and OSX GUIs are truly negligible. I think the OP will be in the minority when Win 7 is released. The key issues that hurt Vista have been pretty much fixed by...

I Think Windows 7 RC Looks Disappointing - Do You Too?

++ on the italized part. Folks go out and spend good money on memory that they then don't want to use. The chips eat the same amount of electricity, why not use the memory to its fullest? PhreePhly
