Filezilla server. I can get that up and rolling in 30 seconds. I often use it for scan to network because a lot of copiers don't seem to function well with SMB whereas FTP always works.
Since you wont be relying on the HD integrated graphics for which there are no 7 drivers, all you would need is a USB controller card. It is possible with desktops because of this. There are various other chipset drivers that will not install and may impact performance as it is uncharted...
Does the main drive happen to be a solid state drive? I only ever really see undetectable drive failures with no warning for SSDs. I personally have never worked on a mechanical drive that is suddenly undetectable, they get super slow and usually trip a SMART warning. If its under warranty...
Lockhunter is my sidekick here, another on the list of freeware above and I'll bet they also have "delete on restart" functions as well but it's what I've always used.
