Least favorite video card of all time?

Yep, also got one of these. Was my first 3D card and I had to specially order it from overseas. Despite matrox's hype, it rendered slightly less frames than my cpu could on its own in Quake 1. Total disappointment.

I'm also keen to hear how BC2 runs with the new ones. I've stuck with 10.4a preview for a while now as it is/was the best BC2 driver. I play competitively with up to 3 matches a week, so I don't have much time to risk trying out a new driver based on how poor the ones since 10.4a preview have been.

can i turn 5850 to 5870

Set your 5850 to 930 core and 1200 mem and it will perform the same (if not a tiny unnoticable bit faster) as a 5870. Pretty much all reference design 5850's can achieve a 930 overclock on stock cooling. Memory speed doesn't matter nearly as much as core to performance over 1000 on the 58XX series.

I think the article posted by the op suffers from a very major flaw. They use only one graphics card at a high resolution, hence they could easily end up gpu bound and not cpu bound in the test. Pretty much makes the article and the results somewhat pointless. Test should of been down with...

CPU bound with 5870/GTX 480

BC2 loves quads, you'll see a decent fps improvement even with your 4870 if you get an quad core and overclock it. Empire TW is single threaded though, so more cores won't help you there at all. I don't play the other games you listed, so I can't comment there. I'd personally go with a 5850...

Suggestions for a video card upgrade.

I'd agree with some of the other posters in this thread that a 5770 would better suit your pc than a 5850. You'd just be spending a lot more on the 5850 and the rest of your rig would hold it back a lot. If you want to go to 5850 performance levels... you need to consider upgrading your cpu as...
