I checked the bundled software for updates, there were none. I'll try the Nero Upgrade.

See if I ever buy an OEM drive again

XP sees it as a DVD-RW. But I've tried both NTI DVD-Maker 6 Gold and Nero 5.5, and neither will work. In fact the former that came with the drive says no supported drive detected. The firmware upgrade for the DRU-510A also said drive not detected.

Well it came with a disc full of utilities to burn dvds, but none of them seem able to detect it as a dvd burn, but show it as a very capable cd burner. I assumed the cd-burning drivers were stock windows xp drivers, but the dvd burning drivers were need to make the rest of it work.

I got Sony DW-U14A DVD+-RW that didn't come with drivers. Nothing I try at Sonys support site works. Were do I get drivers for it?

The irony is that the whole reason we did it is a general lack of trust. If US soldiers can't trust them to behave while they complete there bussiness, there going to tie them up.
