You need to think about what the PC can handle as well. If they are streaming larger movies or even HULU hi-def they may not have the GPU power needed to handle a larger monitor.
I believe the EA430 was called 480W for a while. Or there may have been a separate 480. In any case, the load would not have been so much that the PSU would blow up. You must have had a faulty one.

You want to just swap over your hard drive to the new MB? I'm guessing no with such a drastic change. Or if it worked, the system would be dogged down by the change-over...
I have a few things I would change, although there is nothing very wrong with the build.
I see no real argument for going with an AM3 board at this time, except for some hope that a future CPU will make better use of DDR3.

If I were buying a new PSU for that system, I would likely look at something stronger. I just noticed that Corsair has a promo code floating around for the 650TX at newegg. That's going to cover any single card setup you like.

If you want to run SLI with a C2D it has to be an nVidia chipset, and those seem to be a hassle and often more trouble than they are worth. I rarely hear much good about them, although some of the other nVidia chipsets seem OK.
