Athlon FSB and Pc133 + WinXP Reinstall

monitor dying? or fixable? maybe video card? crazy flicker problem

Find a friend or someone you know that has a proper working monitor, then test it to really make sure it's your monitor and not anything else. Once, my system didn't want to boot, or booted into Windows but with errors and awful flickering monitor (everytime the mouse moved). Changed to a Lcd...

monitor choices...

If you're going the way of the LCD, do not skimp. I'm using a Samsung 152T (15" Lcd), it's not bad. For an average user/gamer like me... btw, this monitor's reviews scored better, especially in the Lcd refresh (trails, etc). My opinion is, this one's definitely better than Apple's G4 Lcd (older...

Gigabit over AGP?

PCIexpress is meant to be scalable, if you look at the recent roadmaps for Intel, the boards probably won't have AGP but a PCIexpress x16 as replacement, and 'normal' PCIexpress x1 slots too. I think there was an article here on AnandTech, PCIexpress = drooooool :D

Old 1 GHz computer: would upgrading it be worth it?

I'm currently using a Athlon Tbird 'C' 1333, will something from the earlier AthlonXPs fit and _work_ (ignoring whatever little performance gain) ? The chip's FSB is the same right and I'm more worried about the mobo support (kt7a).

Abit Siluro GF4 Ti 4200 128mb OTES --> Is around $75 a good deal for this? Was thinking of getting a used (but good condition) one on offer to stave off my upgrade cravings for a few months...

How long do you think it will take for IDE (parallel ATA) to disappear?

Consumer side might be a bit faster, maybe 4-5 years. I wouldn't bet on it though, there's definitely quite a stock of IDE drives out there still I suppose. Corporate side, IDE might go on for a while. Think costs...

Not to Bug too much, but CLEAN out your Case folks: Esp. if OCing

You said it. Non-overclockers, wait, let me say this, ALL PC owners should clean the PC up from time to time, like, it's your property?!? Not only fans need cleaning, remember, heatsinks have crevices and places where dust WILL collect! Once I cleaned my cpu's fan, then when I saw through it...

is there any point in upgrading my nvidia 5200 when I only play games at 1280x1024?

Oh my goodness, what unbalance in the Force! Really, go get a decent graphics upgrade... something, anything decent! Don't let your processor have all the processing fun :D

Pentium 200mhz w/ 64MB ram uses?

You could try putting Win98 on it, and try to unbloat it... or maybe Linux? Haven't had experience with Linux, but I think that should bloat less than Winbloat... Last month I put XP-Pro onto my P2-300/160mb RAM. It ran fine, without visual options and most bloat background services. Of course...

POLL: What size is your monitor?

On my own PC, I use a 15" Samsung 152T lcd. Switched from a old 17", display area isn't that much different. It's more rectangular in that sense (1024 x 768, go figure). On another PC, there's a Samsung 17" on it.

Drive Partitioning

For the OS (in your case XP home, not much difference with pro anyway), absolute *minimum* is around 2 - 2.5 GB, for Windows to put its bloat. You said you're putting programs on another partition, so I guess maybe 3 GB ought to do it? Here's how I did my 60GB Maxtor: 5.5 GB - OS and Programs...

I checked http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1904&p=17 and under the HomeWorld 2 part, there was this saying about the R3x0 cards not able to run the game? That's one of the things I'm targeting... Another question: How much do you guys think the 9700pro will stand against 2004...

Quite true, but not exactly. Windows and Gaming could always use extra RAM. Photoshop would fly if you gave it a *separate* and *Fast* hard disk. The Task Manager can be a bit tricky to understand, The 'total' in the bottom-left is supposed to be your RAM + your pagefile added, as far as I've...
