The first "overclock" probably was a million years ago (whenever we began using tools). Somebody figured out that throwing a rock or stick made us faster and able to catch/kill a fast animal. We continued improving tools and doing things better and that's how we rose to the top of the food...
Gotta hand it to Dell, they can build a million computers better than any of us can.
But most of us can build a few better than Dell ever has!
This low power mystery CPU may change the third world countries!
Fern's method is the best way to be sure.
If you are just curious and don't feel comfortable tweaking your BIOS (yet!), when did you buy the CPU? If you got it in 2003 there's an excellent chance it is unlocked. If you bought it new in 2004 or 2005 then it's almost certainly superlocked.
Glad to hear it's working well, Gstanfor! I didn't mean to scare you off KVR400, just inform you of Kingston's and ASUS' official stances on the combo.
Anyway KVR400 works for 7 out of 7 nForce2 Ultra 400 systems we mentioned here. It is understandable that an older non-Ultra chipset would...
Which A7N8X boards do you mean? The A7N8X-E Deluxe vs the A7N8X-X?
A7N8X-E Deluxe overclocks an XP-M2200+ just fine (see signature). About any nForce2 board would including the A7N8X-X but I'd rather have the extra features of the -E Deluxe.
Of course these are ASUS boards not ABit...
Assuming you can change the multiplier of your XP2500+ (have you proven it is unlocked?) I would drop it to 10 or 9 and run Memtest86+ to find the highest FSB. Then you can up the multiplier 0.5 at a time and test again.
Also, is this the rev. 2.0 board? Those are good up to 225 or so while...
Yes, there have been dozens of reports of this problem with the A7N8X 2.0 and A7N8X-E. Kingston doesn't support the -E revision either at DDR400 speed. ASUS recommends exchanging the Kingston ValueRAM and crossing your fingers that you get different DIP chips on the new modules (very hit or miss...
Well I'm glad you're happy but that doesn't mean that's the answer for every application. It would be insane for me to dump four systems that easily do the job when I can continue using them and pick my right time to go A64. I'm not quite ready to say Socket A is history. I bought these systems...
Gstanfor, I have Kingston PC3200 ValueRAM (2x512MB) in each of the four systems below. No problems at all. But I will warn you there are numerous reports that the A7N8X has problems with this RAM at 200/400MHz. Kingston does not officially support the A7N8X at DDR400 speed with this RAM. You...
DAPUNISHER is right! XP mobiles are unlocked. I have four and can set the multiplier to what I want. The last one was manufactured in January 2005 and the earliest was made in the spring of 2004 so nothing has changed. I'm surprised anyone at this late date would say they are locked. Anyway...
Ditto, my four XP mobiles came from Newegg in plastic clamshells with foam to protect the pins. This was wrapped in bubble wrap and stuck in a box big enough for a motherboard! Well protected.
Thanks, Joe, and good luck with it. Color of the package shouldn't make any difference. It all comes down to the stepping of the core (and finally, dumb luck). The only brownie I've ever got was an old desktop XP2400+.
So these new CPUs don't say "Assembled In Malaysia" on the "green or...
