Intel has not yet released chipset drivers for windows 7?

chipset drivers for pXX aren't necessary. they didn't release any drivers for vista either. the only chipset drivers needed are if you have elderly chipsets: INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets intel chipset downloads

audio not switching to headphones

thanks corky, but a software change fixed the problem. the audio driver was using a generic Microsoft HD Audio driver. i uninstalled it and installed the latest Realtek HD Audio driver. now when I plug in headphones, the speakers turn off and the audio for all open apps re-routes to them...

thanks for the feedback but you're missing the point. the PC recognizes that the headphone jack is plugged in. when it's removed, the headphone device disappears. also the audio for any app opened after the headphone jack is plugged in is *automatically* routed to the headphone jack...

every set of headphones i use and a mini-stereo cable all now produce the same behavior. the laptop knows something's plugged in because the headphones device is only visible when something's plugged in. this is a software issue, not a problem with the jack.

whats everyones take on barebones notebooks?

your link now says $350 for the barebones so i don't know if that extra $100 will affect your purchase decision. but otherwise, the price really offsets the risks since the seller seems to be reputable. make sure you get paypal buyer protection.

dead mobo?

thanks for your help but all i get is led 3 (red) lit when the power supply is turned on, and a flicker of led 1 (blue) when the power button is pressed.

DDR2 Going Obsolete with Core i7?

i respectfully disagree. the x58 certainly won't be the only chipset for i7 and when intel releases a mainstream chipset it will probably support ddr2/ddr3. if official ddr3 support is limited to ddr3-1600 then ddr2-1066 won't that far off the mark performance wise and perfectly positioned as...

Best vid card for photo editing dual monitor?

he's already got 3gb so he's only getting a useable 256mb if he adds another gig. that doesn't make sense. keep it at 3gb. to really speed up premiere, add a second internal or e-sata drive and use it for scratch/editting.

3870 and 4870 in CF

from what i've read, hybrid crossfire will only work with GPUs of the same family (HD 3xxx + another HD 3xxx; HD 4xxx + another HD 4xxx). anyway, the hd 4870 is so much faster than the hd 3870, it would be like pairing me with rafael nadal in doubles tennis... i would just slow him down and...

Budget card for a friend

6600gt was a great card back-in-the-day. newegg has a foxconn 8600gts for $72 before $10 rebate. it would be a big step-up in performance and let your bud give newer games a try. if you can swing it, the egg also has an evga 8800gs for $110 before $30 rebate. that's probably the best $80...
