  1. Advice for a new guy

"Given that you are looking at College expenses I would definitely suggest looking at Mfenn's Budget Build as it gives an excellent example of a $1000 budget build. You can tweak it here and there if you don't mind expanding your budget, but I would strongly suggest staying under $1500 if you do...
  2. Am I dreaming?

Is it me or is AnandTech changing back into a hardware review site? It feels like AnandTech has been concentrating on anything powered by a SOC the last couple of years. Please tell me I'm not dreaming. If I'm not. Thank you Anand. Cheers, signed Snappy Dresser
  3. [Help Please] Major FPS Drop after upgrade to i7 3770k

Z68 chips may require a BIOS update to run Ivy Bridge CPUs unless this is a very recent version of the board. Check the Gigabyte site.
  4. Asus P8 Z77-V Pro Sata 6 issues

Try this. Disconnect the WD Caviar, boot and get into the BIOS adn make sure the SSD is showing. Power down, physically install the optical drive (Windows will load the driver for it automatically), load the operating system, and then reconnect the WD Caviar.
  5. newly built PC turns on and shuts off immediately. repeats

Double check the intel cooler if you're using it. These pins can pop if not pressed down firmly enough and cause boot cycling. Double check your RAM making sure it's seated correctly, and in the right slots. If this and other suggestions don't work, do what Paul said :-)
  6. Computer Massive slowdown

You might want to run Malwarebytes Malware Remover and any other anti-virus and spyware aps you might have in safemode. Knowing how much people like to use their laptops on their laps, on bedspreads etc, at the very least it might also be an idea to clean it out with compressed air . I'd be...
  7. System Build

I run a similar system with an MSI 560Ti (which I also overclock) and I cannot run max settings in Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Crysis series and a few others I have played at one time or another. If you want healthy frame rates, no jutters, and an emmersive environment and if you If you really...
  8. System Build

I don't disagree with you, but if you have the budget why not get higher end hardware? I run a MSI 560Ti, and cannot always get the frame rates I like, particularly when online (which is where the fun is). I am playing at 1920x1200, with settings not maxed out. Had I the budget I'd go for the...
  9. Lenovo G560 won't turn on

    What kind of noise?
  10. my browsers keep crashing on pages

Check LAN cable(s) - Swap out if you have a spare. Check with ISP and see if they can see anything wrong from their end. Power down router, modem and computer. Restart modem, then router, then PC. No luck? Install Malwarebytes Malware Remover, run in safe mode. Could also be a faulty...
  11. System Build

As an old guy myself I admire a person who likes to take on something new. With your budget you could build a machine capable of some serious crunching, but a very capable gaming machine can be built for around 2000.00 . Motherboard - Certainly nothing the matter with your choice in the ASUS...
  12. upgrade or new PC? Advice please.

Please find yourself a different IT person to talk to about your possible upgrading. This person either has no idea what they are talking about or are purposely misleading you. Currently there are PCI-e cards available for 150.00 that are orders of magnitude faster than a 7950 GT and capable of...
  13. Best Starter Computer for gaming

If you go pre-built definitely upgrade the PSU. The PSU's in these factory made PC's are marginal at best. With a system running a 400 or 500 series nVidia card or the AMD equivalent why risk a PSU that's not just inefficient but may not even pull the power it's rated for and may take critical...
  14. Will this GPU work with my rig?

Hi The PSU won't be a problem. The idea of going with an i5 or i3 processor means having to get a different motherboard and new DDR3 RAM. (current e8500 is a socket 775 whereas the i3 and i5 are going to be an 1155 socket). Your system, (depending on how much RAM you have) should run the game...
  15. My Dilemma

I have a PVA LG 24" and haven't had any problems running in various resolutions. I have a q6600 w/ 2GB ram, and a 1950 pro. Or in other words there's no way I can play COD4 or Crysis at 1920x1200.....damn. Anyhow, the monitor seems to handle other settings w/o much degradation of image at all...
