No POST, no beep, no video

the sound and smell would suggest a capacitor that blew. i'd do a careful visual check on the board to see if any of the parts look a little "off". i'd think it was your board too.

Is my board dead

Was your computer connected to a surge protector? If you did get hit by lightning without proper protection, you might've lost more than just your motherboard. But it definitely sounds like at least one major component is shot.

I think that depends on how old your parts are and how long you intend to keep your current rig, should you just buy the replacement mobo. You can still find plenty of mobo's for the current Intel and AMD lines of processors, but both companies will be shifting their tech soon; Intel moving to...

Sounds like the mobo then. Just because the light is on doesn't mean that the mobo is properly distributing power. Did you check the board to see if any of the capacitors were toast?

If it's not the PSU and you can't get your drives/fans to spin, I'd probably think it was the motherboard too. Do the fans/drives spin without a videocard plugged into your system? jc

I think it's totally possible, if your PSU dies and sends crazy unregulated power into the rest of your computer as a last act of vengeance. If you didn't lose anything else attached, consider yourself lucky. jc

I'm guessing that it's the processor, although you might've purchased a lemon mobo as well. Do you have another chip that you can test the mobo with? What about starting up with just a blank mobo (I've never done this, so I don't know if a mobo is capable of emitting a beep code w/o a processor...

I think the most likely suspects, since you replaced the video card, are going to be either the PSU or the motherboard; but since everything appears to spin, I think it might be a motherboard problem. Those are hard to diagnose unless you can confirm that all the other parts are working. At...

Maybe try running with the five essential components (mobo, CPU, RAM, PSU and vidcard) and then see what happens when you run missing the vidcard, then the RAM and then the CPU. If everything seems to start up fine (you get beep codes) without the missing part, you can probably narrow it down to...

Good call JeepinEd. It's a good thing I have an electrical engineer as a roommate. He has all sorts of electronics equipment; so I think he'll be willing to help see if the voltages are correct on each rail. jc

Computer Doesn't Boot..

I just had a problem that's the same--have you tried testing the computer with just the PSU, mobo, CPU, RAM and Vid card only? With my setup, my videocard had died, so when I pulled the videocard, the computer started up fine. You might see if a friend can test some of your components in...

Here's an update: I tested the XFX 6600GT on my friend's computer and it did the same thing to his computer. No POST. His machine was an AMD-based machine too. His XFX 6600GT does work, so it's pretty clear that it's the videocard. I'm going to RMA it with XFX, who thankfully has a lifetime...
