fortunately for you, there are completely 'free' linux operating systems for you to choose from. for myself, i will happily see distro's ship with binary drivers until that happy day when graphics vendors feel they can open source their drivers without getting caught up in patent infringement...

probably opensuse with YAST. i use suse 10.1 with the KDE desktop every day on the work notebook, brilliant.

if the 8600U is a 256bit part with 7900GTx performance I will buy a pair to stick in my short depth HTPC case.

the Inq again: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37203 they say 256bit for the 8600, but the translated link makes no mention of memory bandwidth. I sincerely hope it is 256bit!

if i had a PC that could make good use of an 8800GTX then I would get that, if not i would opt for the PS3 and put linux on it.
