  1. btrfs is supposed to be fault tolerant right?

That would affect any filesystem though.
  2. btrfs is supposed to be fault tolerant right?

I wanted to add that the recommendation for RAM with ZFS was 1 gigabyte of RAM per 1 terabyte of storage. I also found out that ZFS won't compress a block unless that block can be compressed by at least 12.5% or more.
  3. btrfs is supposed to be fault tolerant right?

EXT4 has been solid for me. I haven't lost any files to it yet, even with multiple crashes on several systems. My Ex's laptop had no usable battery, and a faulty power cord. That laptop probably saw half a dozen power failures a day, and never lost any files.
  4. btrfs is supposed to be fault tolerant right?

    I use rsync -Pavx
  5. btrfs is supposed to be fault tolerant right?

btrfs wasn't unstable for me, but was slow on performance for my particular setup. I also didn't like the way it dealt with metadata. I use ZFS on top of luks on a machine with only 4GB of RAM, and it runs fast with no issues.
  6. ubuntu 16.04 release today

Speaking of ZFS, I'm currently setting up Ubuntu devel branch on a new laptop running ZFS. I already have Debian with ZFS on it. The datasets are zroot/debian, and zroot/ubuntu. Debian boots just fine, however, Ubuntu insists that the zpool it's looking for is called rpool and not zroot. So...
  7. Why does Windows 7 still give a smoother user experience than Linux Mint 17.3?

I get the same result whether it's the Intel IGP, or with an nVidia card and proprietary drivers. Also doesn't matter if I use Fluxbox w/ Compton, or KDE. Either way the scrolling isn't silky smooth, but it's also not that bad. I could potentially blame LCD motion blur for my experience.
  8. Why does Windows 7 still give a smoother user experience than Linux Mint 17.3?

I'm pretty sure Linux has this too. But if we're simply talking about a recently loaded webpage, I suppose it's already in RAM anyways.
  9. Why does Windows 7 still give a smoother user experience than Linux Mint 17.3?

Thanks. I've only recently started using chrome myself, mostly for Netflix and YouTube. btw, Netflix works under Chrome stable without any hacks.
  10. Why does Windows 7 still give a smoother user experience than Linux Mint 17.3?

Firefox may not scroll silky smooth, but it scrolls a lot better than Chrome does. Chrome almost seems to suffer from screen tearing when scrolling.
  11. why is rsync sometimes so slow?

What about ACLs? I find the checksum option to really slow things down, especially when I sync over 5TB of data. Once in a while, I find rsync will sync things that haven't changed, but that's usually to a non-native filesystem.
  12. Which is the right way to issue a tar command when you restore your system

Usually. Don't think I've any major issues doing it this way. Are you staying on the same hardware?
  13. Which is the right way to issue a tar command when you restore your system

    This is the command I've used to backup my system with tar tar --one-file-system -cvpzSf /path/to/tar.gz / c = create v = verbose p = keep permissions z = gzip archive | j = bz2 | J = xz S = handle sparce files f = file name of archive And the command I've used to restore tar -xvpzf...
  14. Getting a friend that loves Win7 onto Linux?

In my experience, it's easy only when that person wants something other than Windows.
  15. Do you keep Windows around even though you have Linux?

I still have XP in a virtual machine. Comes in handy for things like using APC's software to just off the damn beeping on my UPS when the power goes out.
