I'll give that a shot, thanks. Just a fyi, this machine has been up and running for a few years now with no issues.

Computer turns on but no video at all on the monitor, no BIOS, no nothing. I tried changing monitor, video card, cmos battery and still nothing. I removed the RAM and got no beeps or any sign from the mobo that there was something wrong. The fans turn on, the hard drive seems to spin up, the...

nope. still working on it. the owner of the laptop gave me the admin password and it doesn't work.

ok. i'll try and give that a shot when i get the laptop back up and running. i went ahead and uninstalled SP 2 ... CPU usage went back to normal ... started installing MS updates ... SP 1 (express) ... system now hangs on boot ... agp440.sys found this ms article ...

i've installed most of the updates from dell's site for the laptop (inspiron 8600) ... would it be on there site or intels site?

well i've updated a bunch with the dell drivers. even did a bios update and still same issue. if i disable all 4 usb root hubs i have no issue. but i am assuming that means none of the usb ports will work .... anymore ideas? i've searched online and the dell forums and can't find anything.

its not my laptop, i'm fixing it for someone else. i'll try and figure out what new drivers dell has up. as far as usb connections goes, i think they have mouse, digital camera, printer, and i found out they have been trying to do VHS to DVD transfer. not sure if they are using usb for that.

i checked the dell site and they didn't have specific "updates", they just listed drivers i downloaded Process Explorer program from sysinternals and was playing around with it. i found the 'System' process and checked the properties. i looked at all the threads running and 1 came right to...

i'm not sure, i'll ask the laptop owner. the owner is not computer savy, so i doubt they would have installed sp2 themselves. also how would i do a clean install of xp sp2? its a dell and i don;t think they have the cd's.

i did look in the task manager / processes image name: system , user name: system i tried to shut it down and i can't. unless there is a way in XP to kill system processes
