The current Athlon XP CPU's can do more work per clock cycle. The fastest AMD CPU you can buy is clocked @ 2250MHz. Intel CPU's have a long pipeline and need high clock speeds to get the same ammount of work done. This is why a 2250MHz Athlon can be as fast as a 2800MHz Pentium 4.

Here's how I see it. A new DDR speed is out every few months currently PC3500 is the latest (and is only 100MB/sec on average behind PC1066). A new RDRAM is out every few years DDR400 in dual channel will walk all over RAMBUS for years to come and that will become a reality when the 800MHz P4's...
The is almost no performance gain from CAS2.5 to CAS2 in DDR RAM. Why? Because DDR runs at the rising and falling edges of the clock so that equates to a 4th of a difference instead of a whole half clock cycle (2.5) as in SDRAM.
