Do you think it's worth it to upgrade a 5400 rpm laptop hdd to a 7200 rpm?

That's been my experience. If you had a 4200 rpm drive, than I'd suggest upgrading, but I don't think that you'll see much of a difference.

Wow, I would never have guessed that in the land of free enterprise you would need government permission to install a security system. Thanks anyway. If anyone else has built up one of these, I'd love to know about it.

Did you get something set up? I'm in the market for something similar for an organization where I'm a volunteer manager. We can buy something off the shelf, but part of me thinks it'll be fun to build it up myself.

DVD Burning Issues

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, track-at-once isn't an option when burning an image. Anyone else? I'm stumped.

If you're looking for a place to rent equipment, check out Long and McQuade. They have a few locations in the GTA (incl. Bloor & Ossington) and their equipment and prices are pretty good. Good luck.

Digital Camera Recommendations

I just bought the Sony you mentioned. It works quite well and it seems to be a good value (the same features as their 4.0 MP model, but less $). It's my first digital camera, so I can't compare it with much else, though.

Neal: did you ever get this problem solved? I just got an SS51 and am having the same problem -- on-board LAN not working, PCI NIC working well, but don't want to give up my only PCI slot! Thanks!

The first problem seems endemic to any hard-drive based device. The RAM buffer allows the HDD to only spin when needed, rather than continuously. The lag you're experiencing is waiting for the drive to spin up, not actual seek times. You could have super-fast access to tracks, but your battery...

Thanks for the suggestions. The Maxtor is on a shared cable with the WD. I'm pretty sure that the IDE cable isn't turned around (unless for some reason it's supposed to be different from the WD?).
