Asus Z87 Pro Won't Post With 2 Ram Sticks

Have you used CPU-Z or the Asus utility suite to determine what RAM timings it is actually using compared to the specification? You could try manually setting them one count slower to see if that helps.

Changing out the motherboard without reinstalling OS...

I have done it. I used a replacement but identical motherboard. As I recall the only changes needed were to reset the BIOS to the custom settings I had made. The operating system (XP in that case) was ok with it.

ASUS motherboards, what does "auto" actually mean?

Not sure whether it is right or wrong, but I interpret Auto as permission for the BIOS to determine the best setting and use it. Also it gives permission to change how it is used depending on other factors such as CPU load.

Any way to speed up fan on CPU with an Asus mobo?

That motherboard should have come with an AI Suite that includes the Fan Expert Tool. With Fan Expert you can do a User Program for each fan to control how it responds to temperature. I find it works very well.

I find picking motherboards comes down to the real basics. Does it have the inputs and outputs you require? Does it have the required number of USB 3.0 ports at the back and mid to supply the case ports? Does it have the number of SATA ports you want? eSATA? Does it have the PCIe slots you need...
