Yeah but I dont see how a surge protector can protect internal components from an internal voltage surge.

I tried that and I even tried a backup power supply and it still won't come on. Is it possible the power interruption could have damaged the mainboard?

Basically I did what I said in the post title. I unplugged a case fan (directly connected to the PSU) while the PC was on. The computer immediately shut off, and I was able to get it to start about 3-4 more times but it would only stay on for ten or fifteen seconds. Now I get no response at all...

Problems with onboard sound

I tried everything again with a new 530w, 24-pin connector PSU and it still didn't work. According to someone on another board, however, the 20-pin connector may have actually killed the board.

The manual says a 20 pin will work as long as the PSU is >300watts (mine is 420 with 18amps on the +12v rail). I will try to pick up a ATX12V 2.0 compliant supply from CC today however.

But how does that explain me getting into the bios once? If the bios needed updating, shouldn't it have never let me in at all? Also, the box says "Supports latest intel dual-core CPU" and the revision of the board is v5.1, which supports Conroe according to newegg and their site. Also...

Hard Crash

Its a Logitech Z-560 (very, very powerful), and it is about 6-8 feet away from my computer. No I don't leave my computer on 24/7--I almost always turn it off from about 1:30AM to 10AM, and reboot sporadically throughout the day.

i had a memory problem with one of my original sticks, but i replaced it and ran memtest for about 4 hours without any errors...so i dont think its memory. also, temps look fine. (42 C for 2500+ and 28c case). perhaps I should look into getting some rubber washers?
