Recovering Data off an old drive

I've got someone's hard drive from a ~5 year old HP desktop (motherboard has blown capacitors). When attaching the drive to my comp via a IDE>USB adapter, it loads a 7gb HP_restore partition, and a 104 gig partition that windows cannot read. Disk management says the partition needs to be...

Broken pins on IDE drive - how to repair?

If its an IDE drive, depending on where the pin is broken, and your soldering skills it shouldnt be hard to solder a piece of solid core copper wire in place of the pin. I've used this fix on a few drives.

WD640AAKS read dropped to 3.5mb/s

The drive reads at ~120mb/s on the first ~310gb, and near zero on the last 300 gb. Reinstalling the drive reverts it back to DMA-5, but as soon as a transfer is started, it quickly drops to PIO and pops up massive quantities of errors. Thanks for your help. RMA time

It dropped to PIO mode. I'm getting more and more HD controller errors in the System Log. Going to reseat the cable.

I havent run a HD scan from my ultimate boot cd yet. Just completed WD diagnostics tools, all passed. Computer Management/Event Viewer/System Log gives me an atapi error on IDE port 2. 50% sure that is the port this HD is connected to. Also, in the event viewer, there are quite a few...

WD640AAKS read dropped to 3.5mb/s

Read speed was at normal levels yesterday. Today, the drive speed using HDtach says average read speed is 3.5mb/s, cpu utilization at 40%, and access time at 12.6ms. My other two WD250's run at normal speeds. Abit IP35 C2D 6400 @2.8 w/ most recent bios Is the drive toast?

ASUS $199 Eee PC laptop

To install xp with a usb cdrom, just plug the cd drive in, set the first boot device to the usb cd drive, take out all the expansion cards you have (sd flash, usb thumbdrives, etc). I really recommend nliting the xp cd, you can get the install down to around 500mb.

Asus EEE -- 2GB vs 4GB

If you need a laptop as your main computer the eee isnt the way to go. It doesnt have the speed, power, or storage that you would need for a primary system. As a second computer, it works beautifully.

Should I reseat my CPU?

if you're getting a new motherboard and transferring a cpu from the old one, then yes, you have to re-apply thermal paste. I'm not an expert with AMD's and temperatures, but those don't seem too bad.

IP35 board and RAM placement

You want to put both sticks in 1/3 or 2/4, your system probably wont recognize all 4GB of memory due to 32 bit limitations(assuming you are using 32 bit like most people, look up other threads for that reasoning) The only wear and tear you'd have to worry about is moving them many, many times.

Anyone with a P180 make cutouts in the mobo tray ala P182?

Another tip to help wire management if you're going to put in a ton of hard drives in the bottom section - take out the middle position fan and put a fan in front of the hard drive bays instead. It'll give you more room to put wires between the PS and HD's. A 120x20mm fan like This fits in...

Just did the operation today. After nicely arranging the cables, the side panel would not go on due to not enough clearance, broke two hooks on the sidepanel. Took the cable sleeving off the motherboard power cables, fits perfect. Case runs a few C cooler now, and looks a hell of a lot...
