I got it working actually
turns out the administrator account was disabled because the computer had been upgraded to windows2000 from win98, I guess Microsoft automatically locks/disables the admin account when you upgrade from 9x to nt for secuirty reasons.
But with this handy-dandy linux boot...
okay i made a linux floppy that boots but it won't mount the drive system
says Kernel panic: can't mount root fs at 03:01
so I'm guessing this is because it can't read the ntfs partition
so how do i setup this ntfspro thing?
I thought I didn't need to do that with linux ?

However, I still have the Abit board with the leaky capacitors, I think it might be a fun side project to replace them.

Well I got this mobo from a friend, I do have the box and maybe the users manual, but the motherboard must be over 3 years old by now, I don't think the warranty would cover it now do you ?
I dont know man, perhaps try lowering ur memory clocks, sounds like that might be the problem,
However if u did system restore and ur system works fine now then I guess it was a software problem, although I don't see how software problems could cause your computer to randomly reboot...
The resistors (or capacitors) on a motherboard I got for a client seem to be leaking. There is a crusted brown fluid that has leaked out of several of them onto the motherboard. In most cases it has leaked out, dripped downward, and then dried and crusted.
Now this may be blatantly obvious...
