I have a similar problem. You are not alone. None of my USB 1.1 removable HDDs will work unless I disable the USB 2.0 controller. I have found a way around it. I have to reboot the system with my devices attached.
I have XP SP1, had BIOS v1.005 and I flashed it to v1.007 with the same results.
I got the system to recognize the USB devices but I have to reboot everytime I plug them in.
The system will only recognize the USB Drives if I boot the system with them installed. If I plug them in while the computer is already booted to XP it acts like they are not even plugged in.
