I found the trick to be mostly due to the hard drive controllers. I put only hard drives on the Promise Ultra100 controller. For the onboard IDE, where I had a CDROM, CDRW, and a ZIP100 hooked up, I found out that if I set them to AUTO that I would get random freezes...
I personally wouldn't bother waiting, look at the preview of DDR on HardOCP, the only place where gains were noticed was in synthetic ram benchmarks ... like SiSoft Sandra's ram benchmark ... and what most know is that these benchmarks don't mean crap. DDR does little for overall system...
I'd recommend getting a slocket, like the IWILL Slocket 2, so you can plug in a current Celeron II or P3. Then a video card upgrade, a card based on the GeForce2 MX would be a really good deal.
Make sure you download the latest version of the 4in1 drivers rather than using the one off of the ASUS cd. You can download them off of http://www.viahardware.com. The latest version is 4.25a. Also download the latest Promise Ultra 100 drivers from ASUS's site.
