That seems like a LOT of money, even for a rebuilt. Junkyard Versa engines seem plentiful (check car-part.com), there's plenty of them with 30-50k miles for $600-800.
Not sure how/why the chain failed so early on yours, but assuming the new one's okay you should be good another 150k miles easily.
I forgot about this thread since I started up running last year. I'll drop in my total mileage up through yesterday, and update as I add more:

Of course the salesman is going to say it's immaculate, amazing, awesome, well worth 2x what they're asking for it, is stuffed with only the best Spoon/Mugen parts. They want to make a sale afterall, and salesman are paid to build excitement and sell cars.
My trouble is the solar panel doesn't provide enough power to run the motor indoors though. The ideal design would store the trickle charge, then discharge the capacitor to run the motor once the capacitor was fully charged.
The switch is an interesting idea, one way would charge the...
Will that give the behavior I'm looking for? From some examples I've seen online it sounded like the power source would need to be removed before the capacitor would discharge.

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a few of these:

It's a simple circuit where the solar panel is connected directly to the motor. In the default setup, the solar panel only provides enough power to run the motor under direct sunlight...
Carfax really seems to have dropped the ball.
Buying a car last month, I ran a Carfax report and it just didn't make sense. It claimed 1 owner, but it was bought/sold 4x in the last 11 years. I asked a Carfax customer service rep what it meant, she didn't know.
I got an autocheck...
Rosenthal Mazda sells a hose kit to replace all of them with OEM parts. Easier than trying to make the "kinda close" aftermarket ones to bend in to fit all the weird angles, etc.

In addition to Zenmervolt's reply, sometimes if the contamination from the failed compressor is bad enough a full system flush to clean out any debris/crud from the failed compressor is necessary, which can add to the cost.
My local Home Depot has a "scrap" collection in the back with pieces exactly like what you're describing. It's usually like $0.30-$0.50 per piece or something. Sometimes you can find pretty good pieces there, more than once I've seen 2x6 lengths 4-ft long treated wood, going for $0.50.
I'd say keep it & do the following:
Figure out how much car payment you'd be comfortable with the new car. Set aside half that monthly into a savings acct until you reach $3k or your first repair. Pay for all maintenance/repair work from that fund, and replenish it via the...
