Transfering Files From PC to PC Using a Crossove Cable

Start > Control Panel > Network Settings > Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties Then select "Use the following IP address:" and enter the values cubby1223 said. When you're done, go back there and set it back to automatic or you won't be able to connect to the internet. :)

PC dies and won't start....

Then it's the power supply or the motherboard. If you know how to reset a BIOS, then I doubt you need further instructions on where to go from here. :)

Dell Optiplex 755

I have no experience with Server, so I'll bow out here. I just mentioned other OS for troubleshooting purposes. Specifically, if it installed, say, XP with no problems, then it likely is a Server specific problem. As for fixing it if that's the case, I don't know.

Question about Virus/malware etc

Also, were she to download something that sat dormant and inoperative on her Mac but that you copied onto your computer, it could certainly spring to life inside its new squishy Windows home. But that'd be a non-issue as long as you have up to date virus and malware protection.

An nvidia 8800 series will keep you in your budget without complicating things by adding SLi or needing a power supply upgrade. And you'll get some pretty darn slick graphics from it too.

Memtest might be worth a scan, but I'm not surprised at all that Windows 98 is freaking out with a gig and more in there. Seriously, if you just need an internet browser for now use Ubuntu and boot the LiveCD or install it or something. In fact, make yourself an Ubuntu 7.10 cd. It has memtest...

Well, if you have a power supply tester (like this http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...=1647108&Sku=ULT31553) then that'd be a good place to start. Also, try bypassing the power strip like I mentioned earlier.

Try the basics of elimination. Plug in the computer directly to the outlet. If there's no difference, begin unplugging things both externally and internally. If it comes to life, plug what you just unplugged back in. Then try it again. If you're stripped down to your power supply...
