I had a Plextor 20x and loved it except the software (Roxio-Adaptec) which came with it caused all kinds of grief with my Win2k system. Got a 40x Liteon and love everything about it. FAST! quiet, and comes with Nero which is far superior to the Adaptec software.
I'm running a Belkin 10/100 3-port + uplink with wireless and it works ok. I have also used SMC, Netgear and Linksys and there isn't any big difference. The SMC has a print server and that is a nice addition.
A bad NIC can be ringing and bogging the network down. Any true network guru would put a sniffer on the network and track traffic Its not a tough job. We had a bad NIC (3com) doing exactly that. the network CRAWLED. A simple check is to unplug one machine at a time and see if thruput...
BB is selling the D-Link DI-704P router/switch with print server for $79.99 and has two rebates for $50 bringing it down to about $30. Buy 2 NICs for $15 ea and you have a system capable of supporting 5 PCs on a network where they can all access internet at the same time, share a printer, and...
does your wireless access point have any RJ-45 wired inputs? If not, it will be tough to link up with wired. I don't think you can go with standard NIC and ICS to get to the wireless, but am not sure. What is the brand/model of the wireless access point?

Extra fans: Buy 3 or 4 ball bearing fans and use them IF they don't come with the case. Shoud run...
I have SMC, Netgear, Belkin, and Linksys routers. Nothing beats the SMC for simplicity and performance. The others setup pretty easy also, but the SMC has been a better performer.

You need to buy a new ATX power supply. You can't convert AT. Connectors are different and wiring a new plug can be tricky. Also, the power supplied to each rail is different.
I just loaded an Aptiva and had to update BIOS to load win98. Go to ibm.com and in the search window type: aptiva bios, or aptiva {model number} bios. It will take you to a link. after update you should be able to define a large partition hard drive and load ok.
