Best way to apply thermal grease?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the credit card/razor blade method? That gets it the most even. The drop in the middle seems like it would be confined only to the center of the heatspreader.

Hard drive seems a little slower in new E6600 system

By IDE, you mean SATA? My HDD is SATA and my DVD drive is IDE (which I haven't noticed anything wrong with). I just updated to the latest BIOS a few minutes ago, I'll post if I see a difference. If it's not just me and there really is an issue, I'll see about getting a controller card.

Perhaps, but I'm going to go for it anyways. Do I need to use as many different grits as the guy in that guide did? I only want to spend a few bucks on paper :P

It may report inaccurately, but 2/3 of the heatspreader not making contact would affect temps nonetheless. Thanks for the link.
