Video card or CPU?

Thanks for the responses. Resolution doesn't really matter as I'm still rocking a CRT (max 1600x1200, 125dpi). Let's just say I am unable to put up with TN panel limitations, and too cheap to get a nice IPS panel. :) My typical gaming resolution is 1280x960.

Are Sound Cards worth it?

Dedicated sound card will almost always give better audio quality than onboard, but you'll spend $100+. The cheaper cards just aren't going to be that much better than onboard. To the OP: scratchiness...is it distortion or static? If distortion, then it is your speakers. Computer speakers...

Any card with the X-Fi will sound fine (stay away from the XtremeMusic which is a re-branded Audigy 2). Definitely upgrade your speakers/headphones first, or you won't be able to hear the difference. In regards to EMI shields...are you experiencing problems with EMI interference? If not...

Which Processor for a Server?

Theoretically it would be limited by the ethernet as 1Gbps is less than the 3Gbps SATA II, but in reality, yes, the hard drive would be the limiting factor. I have Windows Home Server running on my old P4 2.4GHz machine with 1GB of DDR RAM and ATA/66 hard drive. I notice no speed problems...
