Potential sidegrade e8400 @ 3.6 to x3 720

@denithor, true at stock, but clocking the NB higher improves IPC. The higher you can push the NB, the smaller the IPC difference becomes. If you can get it up to 2.7/2.8ghz from a standard 2ghz, the differences in IPC with the wolfdale would be minimal in most situations.

Please check that my OC looks okay.

Not tame for a first timer, it's quite a jump (~30%) over default and considering the current temperatures and stock cooler, would definitely not push the cpu any further. I'm no i7 owner, but seems you should be able to push memory a bit more, if you were so inclined ;)

Is upgradability part of the equation? As in, the platform or the configuration as-is needs to last a few years? What will be the main task of the new rig? I'm of the opinion that a PII X3 720 is the best value proposition and the minimum you should go for if you want the pc to last a while...

what's the monitor resolution? For half-life and unreal based games, a 4770 will suffice. If going for the heavy hitters, an upgrade to 4870/GTX260 would be recommended. Those would be my only choices, other cards do not provide the same value. Don't go for a 4830 at least.
