  2. (gamersnexus) AMD: "FX is Not EOL" & Why What We Need in a CPU is Changing

AMD may not be officially killing the FX lineup; but if the line isn't going to updated until 2015, it might as well be dead, because FX is already a questionable buy compared to Haswell in nearly every usage case. Examples: Super-budget usage: The FX-4xxx CPU's aren't really a viable buy; the...
  3. how do I overclock intel hd 4600

You can't overclock it. However, if you want to improve the performance of the onboard graphics, allocate the maximum allowed RAM to the iGPU: 1.7GB. I believe you do that through Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. If not, you should be able to pick how much RAM is allocated in the BIOS.
  4. More Broadwell Mobile details revealed

The Broadwell stuff looks like crap; its' just lower and lower energy usage without any real performance gains. The Haswell-E sheet on the other hand looks nice; if its' true, this will be the first consumer Intel CPU with 8 cores and 20MB L3 cache. I see a lot of workstation type rigs...

For $820 you can build a desktop that will run circles around that. Check out this build I threw together: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/stonvnox/saved/37Ps An i5-4430, GTX 760, 8GB RAM, a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. Unless you are on the go 24/7 and absolutely must have a gaming laptop, I...
  6. The reason Intel is not producing hot chips anymore

Everyone in this thread is defending the desktop as a stanchion of gaming. While that's true, there's a far more important user base for the desktop: professionals. Even though the desktop is waning, there are several usage areas where it won't ever go away. First example, I do web...
  7. Build a better $500 gaming PC than the XBox One

Here's a build for you: AMD Athlon II X4 760K: $89.99 @ Newegg. Quad-core, unlocked, punches above its' weight. It's an A10 APU without the integrated graphics. MSI FM2-A55M-E33 motherboard: $39.99 @ Newegg. Highly reviewed on Newegg, from a respected motherboard manufacturer. Supports up to...
  8. Floating Happily in Black Caviar!

What do you mean SSD's aren't a mature technology? Latest gen SSD's are physically tougher than HDD's, and will most likely last as long/longer. Within 3-5 years, the prices on SSD technology will drop to the point where SSD's replace HDD's for most people; except in enterprise/big data...
  9. Update 5 yr old laptop vs new?

Definitely get a new one. The new CPU will give a speed boost, plus I can guarantee there's probably big hardware issues with a laptop that old in the near future.
  10. SSD for desktop even though I rarely boot?

An SSD doesn't just help boot time. It will make the entire system very noticeably faster; program launches, game load times, and file read/writes will all be much faster. Also, the latest-gen SSD's are more reliable than hard drives, due to the lack of spinning platters. You should go with...
  11. Gaming HTPC in compact case

If you want, wait until January, the A10-7850K is coming then, bringing the most powerful integrated GPU yet.
  12. FOSS Alternative to Reason?

Hey all! At home I use a Toshiba laptop as a workstation, it dual boots Ubuntu and Windows 7. Ubuntu of course is faster, looks nicer, etc, but there's a hangup. I'm a musician, and peripherals work awesomely well with Linux; better so than with Windows, actually. I have switched from Cubase...
  13. The little things - why Linux still isn't ready for prime-time.

You realize that VirtualBox flashes a giant popup explaining that you need to press right-ctrl to uncapture the keyboard and mouse, right? That's pretty hard to miss, unless you just click "ok" on windows without reading them. Also...what average user do you know that even uses VirtualBox? By...

Not unless it was a newer printer, unfortunately.

Google Cloud Print works with a large number of newer printers. Basically you sync your printer with your Google account, and print through a dialog.
