You're absolutely right. I'm sure there's a large number of us quiet lurkers who have learned over the years that most tech talk on the 'net is just an exercise in shifting goalposts no matter who the players are. D3D vs OGL, D3D11 vs Vulkan/D3D12, 3Dfx vs everybody, USR vs Zoom, Intel vs AMD...
I've noticed the same, but I haven't drawn a conclusion yet. My gut says it's an oddity from NV drivers. I don't think they had access to samples to make any optimizations. It's certainly in their best interest to optimize. The better their cards look, the more they sell.
I think your last sentence supports the opposing argument of the first two-thirds of your paragraph as well. None of us going into launch, if you had been following the info anyway, should be surprised much by Ryzen's AVX2 performance. Once details came out about how AVX2 would run on it, we...
If one had the fastest machine available to them that fit their budget, it's just a cognitive bias at play to reaffirm the performance of their current PC, or justify not indulging the expense of an upgrade beyond their means. You'll not see it in reviews because in the name of repeatability...
And there lies the gulf between clean install BMs and the user experience. My instinct is that R7 will be faster the way people actually use their PCs; discord/VoIP, chrome/FF, spotify all churning along in the background while gleefully dispatching their on-screen foes. I remember how much...
And we're back to inter-CCX communication and cache thrashing being negatively affected (potentially, theoretically) by the scheduler.
ETA: I'm sorry if that reads poorly. We should keep in mind that we're all having a speculative conversation based largely on unsubstantiated information and...
Wasn't this hack used semi-recently for something? Ie, running a background task affected performance positively. I wanna say it was to stream more smoothly, but if I could remember....
Hasn't considering the hardware that will execute code sort of always been pretty important to code-monkeys? I'm obviously not a programmer, so there is most likely a disconnect between what I think and reality.
It seems to me that if you're going to invest yourself heavily in a project for...
Citation needed. I'm not going to try and assign a motivation to your last few posts, that's not fair. However, I don't get what point you're trying to make. The way I'm reading it is that you're displeased with AMD for launching one of the most clever, clean-sheet CPUs ever and stating how...
I'm in the same boat and couldn't have said it better myself. My 920 is still cooking along at 3.8 and it suits for now. But, it's long in the tooth. SKL was the first time I felt like it would be an upgrade, but I already have 4c/8t. I want to advance. I bought into A64 right before the...
Work PC (i5 4590) won't do it in Chrome or Edge. Chrome drops frames like mad in 8k, drops a fair few in 4k. Edge works like a boss in 4k, no video display in 8k. <shrug>
I think that's going to vary quite a bit. I use a cheap wal-mart kettle knock-off and the airflow/temp regulation is pretty bad, so I use water pans to buffer the temps to stay a bit more consistent. I can do a 2x2 snake with chunks of oak on top and get 10 hours of 225 +/- 15 before more coal...
I was hoping someone would make a post like this. It's an unbelievable mega-bonus for me that the poster references one of my favorite Firesign Theater bits.
I never realized it was odd until I left this area. I also had no idea how crap we are about let and leave too. Oh, the things you learn when you leave the nest for the world.
