Quick question (maybe). The other day I shocked the crap out of my laptop by accident. I sat down to use it and a static shock went from my hand through the USB mouse, after about 10 seconds the laptop shut down.

Kinda a strange problem. When I click "maximize screen" on MS Word, it maximizes to the entire screen except for a small bar at the top where I can see my windows background. The bar is just about 1/3" high. Any ideas? I've tried minimizing, then maximizing, changing screen resolutions...

i don't remember ever installing anything else, but looks like i needed a codec (see OP, i posted a link to a mega-codec pack). problem solved now. :D it is a good possibility that the codec was installed through something else, just as you suggested. so you're probably 100% correct! thanks!
Got a new 160gb hard drive so I figured I'd reinstall Windows XP Pro with it (fresh start). Anyway, now that it is re-loaded, I can't get DVD's to play in Windows Media Player 9.0. It gives me an error "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed...
