Buying OEM CPUs...

The problem is, frankly, that OEM chips are often more expensive than retail ones. Usually the really cheap OEM chips people find are grey market chips that were either pulled from systems, or were not meant for the US market. In either case, you run into warranty issues. For the pittance...

Intel Extreme Q9100 ES???

ES chips can be hit or miss. They are often pre-production samples that may not have all the bug fixes or refinements you'll find in production chips. So there's always a risk of some flaky behavior. On the bright side, having an unlocked chip is pretty fun. Just enjoy it!

Intel C-State Tech

Up to you. Leaving it on will throttle the chip down when not at load, and will save a bit of heat/power. Yes. However, it can occasionally cause problems when you're planning to OC. I personally prefer to shut off throttling when I'm overcocking, but it's not a absolute rule. Play...

Core i7: Temp Diff under load?

I'd remove the heat sink, clean all your TIM off, and start fresh. The only thing under your control that would cause this would be a poor application of TIM - either not enough, or too much. So just to be safe, if you're worried about it, do it again. I am skeptical that mounting direction...

Most of the time OEM CPUs do have a warranty, but they are provided through the reseller or systems integrator. It's true though that you can't RMA an OEM chip through Intel/AMD - generally speaking. I've seen them still work with customers in a bind, but most of the time you have to deal with...

You can usually get around the original owner thing. As long as you have some sort of receipt to show when you purchased it. I can think of a handful of reasons why they have this policy in place though. As for the cooler - yea, they want it back, but they don't always enforce it.

I put together a little tracking worksheet for when you're overclocking a new chip. Print it off, and you can keep track of what settings you're trying, so you don't duplicate efforts. I know after tweaking for a few hours, I tend to get things a bit confused in my head ;) I am pretty sure...
