can i put 2 gig stick and 512 stick ddr2 in notebooks?

Ihave a new notebook that comes with 1 stick of 2 gig ddr2 can i put another stick of 512 ddr2 in there? will that affect anything its a 2008 toshiba 2.0 ghz core 2 duo that takes up to 4 gigs of ddr2

when should upgrading hardware warrant a reformat/reinstall? mother board yes of course.. but how bout just a video card or ram or adding 2nd dvd disc drive or adding 2nd internal hard driver

i have 320 gb harddrive. i only wanted 50 gigs for c drive and the rest for d drive. the built in partition maker can only make my d drive to 120 gigs... is there a free vista partioner? if not name a good one to buy..
