Ryzen: Strictly technical

The Windows scheduler is already NUMA-aware and can tell the difference between logical and physical cores. It has everything needed to schedule work on Ryzen efficiently (except for perhaps some power control stuff), and just needs to be aware of the processor's core and cache topology.

Ubuntu 14.04 Unity slowness

I run Ubuntu on my 2007-era laptop which is much slower than the OP's PC, and while it's not blazing fast, I haven't encountered the problem the OP is experiencing.

Why does yum/apt repos sometimes all fail with 404?

The Ubuntu apt repos take up a substantial amount of disk space, and it's unreasonable to ask mirrors (who are all volunteering their resources) to maintain obsolete repositories indefinitely. Ubuntu offers LTS releases for precisely this reason.

Whether a defragmentation tool is available depends on the file system you're using; however, btrfs, ext4, and xfs (one of which you're likely using on a modern distro) all have online defragmenters available.

/proc/9583/exe This is a symlink to the command that started the process. Knowing what the command is should give you a better idea of what the process is doing and why it's stuck. You can also run `strace -p 9583` to find out exactly what that process is doing.

If your application is testing network throughput, and you're getting 2-3Gb/s over Gigabit Ethernet and you're not using any type of link aggregation, your testing application is screwed up. If you want accurate results, test with iperf instead.
