Just get the right chip (black editions). They come unlocked. You just use your BIOS.
If it has ACC options, its a piece of cake. Enable it and you're set.
Not sure about "break in". I don't think it matters ...
I just got a X2 555 and unlocked it to a X4 Deneb, like 20 mins after I got the OS installed on it =/
The AMD setup is by far the better performance/cost ratio. The Intel Core I3-I7 chips are fast and the I7 is pretty much untouchable by AMD.
Unless money is no factor or you absolutely must have the best performance in, I would go AMD. Its like buying a luxury car - do you need it? No. Should...
X2 555 is a good choice. You can easily OC from 3.2 -> 3.6. The success rate for unlocking to a X4 is fairly good, but not 100% guantreed.
Remember, an AM3 mobo is going to require DDR3. I believe a AM2/+ still takes DDR2?
The X2 555 is a Deneb because of the revision (C3) and the code name AMD uses for this chip. It is simply a Deneb X4 B55 chip with 2 cores disabled.
When they disabled 2 cores, it shows up as a Callisto X2 555 and that's what is being sold as.
And yeah you can disable the 2 extra cores if...
Thats incorrect. A X2 is in no way a "crappy yield" of a X4 chip. AMD simply does not want to have 2 seperate production lines.
Its easier to produce X4s and sell them as X2s. BUT there are a few ways they accomplish this.
1. Build a X4, disable 2 cores sell as X2
2. During Qual Control, 1 or...
Yep, I just got this board. Nothing but good things to say. Stable, cheap, fast and unlocks the Phenom II X2 555 into a Deneb X4 :)
If you want to spend a little more, get the upgraded version (790). Reviews have shown exact same benchmarks so I chose to save $20-30.
Haha same here. I've been running my 939 platform (Athlon XP 3200) for 5 years!
Over clocked from 2.0 to 2.4 with no issues at all :)
Just ordered new hardware though!
Dunno, I think thats debatable. I would say yes because its a newer chip on the newest C3 revision.
Depends on what your daily tasks are. The Athlon II and Phenom II have slightly different target strengths.
Yeah I'm not sure but my guess is they will lower the prices on the current 550 BE and continue to sell them until the stock depletes. I don't see any reason to get a 550 instead of a 555 though. I mean its like < $10 difference for C3 revision and 100mhz faster cores.
Anyone have recommendation on a good case thats less than $60?
I was going to buy a Cooler Master Centurion 5 but they're sold out :(

Will house a "mainstream" AMD Phenom II based system. Nothing super powerful! :)
