BIG question: ON or OFF before plugging/unplugging cables?

you often read in manuals that you should plug in items when the computer is off, even joysticks. now I've been plugging/unplugging joysticks with computer on for a long time. the other day I plugged in a PS2 keyboard with the computer actually on. i moved a computer so that the video lead came...

Poll: Which to upgrade first: CPU or video card?

now I know the price I change my mind. don't get such a slow processor for that price or you'd be kicking yourself. I mean it. it's a slot processor too :( do you realize for that money you could almost get a Duron and board new. at least as good without overclocking it!

Poll: Which to upgrade first: CPU or video card?

I know nothing about Max Payne yet but that celeron is on a 66MHz FSB bus and that affects modern games a lot. I wouldn't count on a 1000 PIII overclock, but if it's cheap, go ahead. on its own you'd be confined to 640x480 I think with the M64 memory bus.

THanks to all the smart people who said we should get an enermax 431 psu... its a piece of crap

this is a capitalist society, Enermax are not giving their cute fans or long cables to you free of charge. someone or something has to pay. if you want no compromises, dig deep for PC power and cooling or someone.

Voodoo5 Overclocking

go easy, they don't make cards like that anymore. there were two memory chip manufacturers for that card, mainly the OCs are limited by the memory. out of Hyundai and Samsung, the Samsung? was supposed to be better. anyway, default clock is 166, someone here runs at 192.

Turning on FSAA in Radeon makes Max Payne, Giants Crash?

the framebuffer needs a certain amount of memory per resolution, can't remember, you can work it out with a calculator like the pixels x 32bits. if you have a 64Mb ddr you shouldn't have practical problems there. but I've seen problems with D3D fsaa turning off in 9x. I don't know about the GF2...

what's the 2D like? I read it had one of the worst. is that the version with the tv-out? is the default clock 200/400?

Turning on FSAA in Radeon makes Max Payne, Giants Crash?

you're not going over the FSAA limit are you? the FSAA in Radeon is a bit of a driver hack. depending on what memory you have installed you won't get rendering internally at over 1600x1200 I believe (which is 800x600 4xFSAA). have you tried another OS or driver?

How to combat memory leaks in Windows 9x / ME ?

this OS is outrageous. or maybe it's the fault of some of my startup programs. anyway, even with 256Mb or more just browsing webpages, or then doing some graphics work, memory is not returned to the OS when closing applications. I have several startup tray items. is it really worth hunting...

Which was your card before GeForce 3 and are you satisfied with the upgrade? (and why did you do it?)

well I had a woman once and it seems to cost money too. but with computer hardware you can sell it back for half your money when you're bored of it. never done that with a woman. sometimes my computer asks me: why don't we have an addition? but I say, no, why spoil things, we're happy as we are...

Where can I find some recent articles/reviews that.......

if you're considering the two cards and concerned about FSAA then let me tell you the Radeon 64 is not what you want. GF2 gives superior choice in 2x modes, and also better speed. I have seen Radeon turn off FSAA before itself, even in 640x480. read it 'n' weep: tech-report benches should tell...

video upgrade: Geforce DDR vs GF3

no the reason I write this is I guess it's been taken from a worse-case scenario... e.g. QuakeIII which used to favor Intel CPUs + a PIIIeb + Duron on a KT133 SDR chipset. even in such a worst case scenario, it's not so bad for the Duron: just want people to know the Duron is at least as good...

Hercules Kyro or Geforce DDR 32...which to keep?

keep the Geforce DDR. it performs more like a GTS in practice than an MX and the original Kyro definitely more like an MX... the GTS was given a few more features. besides the GF 2D probably isn't that great, you don't want to spoil those eyes for the hymn books do you?
