Appalled with Vista

Unfortunately, I was not involved in the ordering process. If I had been, I probably would have recommended a Core 2 Duo. Your experience makes me feel a little better about trying out Vista Ultimate on my Mac Pro.

APC UPS overloaded

Scientific Workstation (~$10000)

Sun may very well be the way to go for you, since most of their workstations are designed to run on multiple operating systems. If you're going to be running an enterprise Linux distro, I wouldn't have any worries about purchasing any of Sun's workstations.

How big was your 1st hard drive...

I had a Mac LC. Two of them, in fact, both with 20 MB hard drives. They still worked fine when I gave them away a couple of years ago. I think my Mac IIsi had a 40 MB hard drive. My Quadra 840A/V had a whopping 1 gigabyte hard drive. In 1993, that was huge.

I'm moving to the dark side....

OS X is six years old, and currently in its fifth incarnation, with a sixth coming out later this year. It is hardly new. It has had plenty of time to mature, and those of us who have been using it since 10.0 have seen it go from being a good OS to a great one. I'm sorry MatLab doesn't work...
