Well...that's not *entirely* true. You are right that it will not work with an EPS12V power supply. An EPS12V power supply's plug will fit into the slot (unfortunately) and if you plug it in and try to turn on the board you hear a high-pitched whining noise until you turn it off.

Yes you can. They also have fiber channel controller cards for some reasonable prices on their website ($129-295), so you pick up a fiber channel card for $129, the 10 pack of hard drives for $119, and you're out only $250 before purchasing cables and an external rack. Not too bad...
