I had the urge to upgrade too but forced myself to cool down. My current laptop - Dell Precision M70 is very nice. With a Pentium M 780, 2GB RAM and a 7K100 100G. It simply does everything extremely well in WinXP and should be very well in Vista too.
Waiting for Santa Rosa would help me to...

Among 3 major chipsets wireless card I have used, Intel is the wrost. No only it has shorter range, the connection quality is poor too.
Both Atheros and Broadcom are good choice. However the Atheros driver update is hard to find. Broadcom chipset is used by several major laptop vendors...
To me the battery life is the 2nd consideration. The 1st is CPU temperture. Under-volting can keep the CPU run at a lower temperture even full speed.
The program I use is RightMark CPU Clock Utility. Same concept.
I am a happy owner of Dell Latitude D610. Several of my colleagues use IBM Thinkpad. To me Thinkpad does have its advantages in design and quality. This is one of the reason that is costs higher than most of the business class laptop in the industry.

If your laptop had BT module, go with the BT mouse. Saving you 1 USB port and its cool to have a mouse that is not so common.
PS. I use the Kensington Bluetooth PilotMouse

3. Atheros has the option for adjusting transmit power...
When I ordered my Dell D505, I only asked for a 30G 4200rpm HD. The minute I got the laptop, I pull it out and put in the 7K60. Sell the 30G on auction site.
Even you are not a game player, you will still be benefit from the speed.
Now I have a chance to buy a Dothan 2.1GHz engineering sample for only $280. Compare with the retail price, this is a real bargain.
My question is besides its "non-mass production" status, should I worry about the reliability? This CPU is for my laptop, I don't intend to o/c.
Last week I installed a Dothan 2.1G for my Dell Latitude D505. It's quite easy because Dell has all the technical documents on the web for reference.
But generally speaking, it's not easy to take laptop and replace the CPU.
