I've never heard of registering a domain for free, so you're pretty much out 10 bucks a year. Other than that, look at the link Jack provided and see what fits your needs.

Ownership of a file

...so you've checked the open files listing on the server from Computer Management > Shared Folders > Open Files ? As far as taking control of a file, someone with administrator access could take ownership of the file and then change the permissions to allow them to delete the file.

I think it probably was the same data that you get from under the Start Menu. The folder itself is in Documents and Settings/%username%/recent.

Active Directory Question

As far as a subdomain, the admin of company.com will always have control fo subset.company.com. If you think about it, it's foolish for them not to. It really depends on what kind of control you don't want the other admins to have on your network, and what access you need to their network...

network traffic when using both wired & wireless

Essentially, separate because you are talking two different desitations. The router is going to direct the traffic from your laptop to the outside world, and from the xbox to the video server. NOw, let's say you were doing XBox live and using the laptop, then you would be sharing the bandwith...

Hmm. Never experienced a setup like that, so I don't know. If you don't want the XP Home machine to require a password, try setting one up and then use userpassswords2 for an automatic login. From the 2K machine, try connecting using the password you created.

why would I Not be able to get onto a website at work that everyone else can?

Page not found, or site not found? I'd clear the IE cache. If the site is not found, check the DNS settings.

Unsernv problem on users trying to log on to domain

This happens for any user that logs into that machine, or just a specific one? If it's specific to one user, I'd log in with an admin account, and rename the offending profile. Have the user log back in and see what happens. Then pull anything needed from the old profile.

Broadband connection goes down w/ inactivity

I assume you are getting an IP address from your router. Check the DHCP configuration lease time. If the lease is set really low, I've seen problems like you describe. I would also check for the latest firmware for your router -- my D-Link DI-524 had issues, though only on the wireless side...
