Why are silicon wafers round?

Some of the wafers that come out of the growing process have imperfections that make them unsuitable for etching dies onto. I would be willing to bet that the wafers in the pictures are throw-aways, or ones that would have otherwise been melted back down.

Well, it appears that mechBgon knows what he's talking about and I'm a "stupid-head". Thanks for the tips. Apparently I had the SK-6 HS seated incorrectly. Although I had it push all the way to the non-screwdriver side of the socket, I think I probaly had it on backwards. Let this be a lesson...

Actually, I mistaked that shim comment with the computer I just built for my parents. The woas of building too many comps, getting them mixed up in my head. But I may have had the SK-6 HS seated incorrectly. Attempt number two at that.

So I just built the system shown my sig and I've been experiencing random shutdowns. I tried running Prime95's small FFT test (the one that just tests the FPU and L2 cache) and it shutdown immediately. My VCore is set to default which according to BIOS is 1.62V. Since this was a little below the...

questions for building a SFF

I'm building a SFF for a GPS/Navigation system on a friends sailboat. It will be a SFF, but I'm also trying to keep power down. As such, I'm looking at SFF with nforce2 boards w/ built in video. My question is would it be a good idea to put a Athlon XP Mobile in it. Do motherboards readily...

motherboard won't boot

My Abit KX7-333R will not boot. After the RAID bios is done checking for devices (when the motherboard is supposed to give control to boot device), the system will go into some sort of error mode. I'm not exactly sure what happens, the monitor goes into standby and the cd-rom drives start...

USB problems on KX7-333R

Nevermind, I took my own idea and figured it out. There is indeed an option in the bios to disable or enable all USB support.

The Device Manager does not show any Universal Serial Bus devices. There should be at least a VIA USB root hub as my mobo (a KX7-333R) certainly has support for USB. I know various USB devices used to be listed as my USB printer did work at one time. I'm not sure what caused it, but somehow all...

hard drive data recovery

I seemed to have lost all the data on one of my harddrives. I believe the partition failed some read/write operation and when I restarted the computer, the file table got screwed up. The partition was a FAT32 that I was just using for data under WIN2K. Does anybody know some recovery methods? Or...

swap partition

Can a swap partition be on a particular partition that would not be able to boot a traditional Win98SE operating system. I have my main hard drive on my motherboards primary IDE controller, but I have a faster hard drive attached to a faster IDE channel. This faster channel is not bootable...

Need help, can't boot into windows anymore, and can't reinstall!

I think you answered your own question, use the spare hard drive to try and install windows to see if you problem is hard drive/os related. It sounds like to me that you're going to have to do a lot of tinkering inside the computer to debug your problem :(

For all of you eagerly awaiting to purchase the nForce...

Hmm...I think the dual channel ddr 128 bit memory bus is a nice feature, even if the athlon 4 can't use it all. That is a significant leap in memory bus architecture. The audio is great, but I'll keep my GF2Pro in it, than save money and drop a GF3 in.
