Which one?

The 212+ will cool better, and thus will/could run almost silently. 9900 looks better, and will still easily keep your 4430 cool... it keeps my 3570K @ 4.5GHz under 75C (at 25C ambient) during normal use (ie: not stress testing with that ambient temp). Running at idle speeds, it's "practically"...

I'm bored....CPU overclocking/underclocking 1v challenge

Haven't tested 1v specifically, but my i5 3570K is about the same as IDC's i7... 3.9GHz. 3.8GHz @ 0.980v 4.0GHz @ 1.040v That's with fixed voltage, variable/offset is a bit worse: 3.6GHz @ 0.984v 3.8GHz @ 1.048v so, 3.7GHz.

ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 won't turn on?

It shouldn't be a memory issue. Like you I have an Ext4, but if the memory is installed in the closest DIMM arrangement [CPU][X][][X][] Instead of what it prefers [CPU][][X][][X] It still boots, will show an error if it has a monitor to show it on, and shows a error code on the 88... I think...

Proper Airflow Questions.

It will help, but likely only mildly... the problem seems to be the videocard. One fan, and really limited airflow. It's a good enough design, just too small... you'll probably have to use a fan controller to get temps decent (assuming you aren't just being paranoid about the temps it's running...

Yeah paint/varnish wouldn't make a difference. In fact you would probably be better off varnishing in the interior as well, it will help keep the air/dust moving inside... and be easier to clean the spots where dust might gather. (obviously make sure it's well dry before installation, the vapors...

Considering you won't be mounting components directly to the wood (ie: it's not going to touch the heatsinks, etc)... thermal properties of the wood wouldn't be much of a concern, but obviously heavier wood would transfer heat more quickly, and retain it longer. You shouldn't mount anything...

need an inexpensive motherboard for 3570K

Ok Mr. NCIX (which by the way I bought all the parts for my latest rig from) *when* is the sale exactly? The current "Beat the Heat" sale doesn't have what the OP asked for. My board is still more expensive than when I bought it (Nov. pre-xmas sale, sale thing). Basically what I'm saying is...

Room VERY hot

The fan probably got disconnected (or may have never been fully connected since it's pre-built?). Like others have said, better cooling on/in your PC won't help the over-all room temperature, and might actually make it worse since the heat being retained by heatsinks, hard drives, etc will be...

Civilization V: Brave New World

Annoyingly so. G&K was a bit too war hungry, but BNW is kinda boring. I usually play on a Huge/Extreme Earth map with 12 civs, 8 CS... this used to work really well, but now even by 2000 AD they usually only have like 3 or 4 cities, and still 8 tiles between borders. No one has been taken...

Why do PCs produce waste heat?

On a somewhat unrelated note, I've often wondered why no one makes use of the waste heat. ie: Heatsinks that have a peltier in it that powers the fan that cools the heatsink.

Best CPU for database work?

(Disclaimer: no real experience) But I'd agree with that -^ But, really it sounds like you should get another computer, leave the 930 as the DB, get a 3570/4670 for your other needs. Stripping out all the non-DB stuff, less interruptions, etc would probably cope fine if it's working currently...

3570k good overclock?

+1 to what has been said, but it depends on your upgrade/replacement path. 4.5GHz @ 1.27v ~80C on air (9900Max) in 25 to 30C ambient (summer, no A/C) usual/daily high is about 72C, idle about 40C... will easily hit TJM/105C with LinX. If that 97C is your "usual" high, such as playing FSX...

Disappointed with Define R4 - am I doing things wrong?

Don't know if the manufacturing changed, but my R2's (3, 2 with the case, one bought after... it really should come with 3) don't vibrate. 1 rear, is screwed directly to the frame/back. 2 front are just floating/clipped in the tray... if either of them vibrated they'd be rather loud, they...
