So I ended up making an XP boot disc, threw it in, booted from it, went to do fdisk and sure enough - "no fixed disks present." I'm completely at a loss at this point. My only shot now is a GRUB boot disc to try to manually boot the XP setup image on the hard drive, but I think that's going to...

Oh there's something in it for me, don't worry about that either. ;) I'll try your traditional fdisk tomorrow, that might have better success. All the fdisk tools from the ultimate boot CD either give me "no fixed disks detected" or "InitDisk no hard disk detected" when I try to run them...

Also: I looked up the PhoenixBIOS user manual online, and it said the message "Operating system not found" meant the BIOS was not finding an operating system on drive A: or drive C:. However, that's exactly where the boot record is pointing to - C:\WINDOWS! So why isn't the BIOS finding an...

Something else interesting to note: FreeFDISK, Extended FDISK, and Special FDISK all report the same thing when the hard drive is in my laptop: "InitDisk no hard disks detected" But yet when the hard drive is hooked up to my desktop with a 44/40 pin adapter, all of those FDISK programs have...

Any Inspiron 600m Users out there?

I think the only thing that might get to you is the construction quality. I had one for about 2 weeks and sent it back - the thing feels cheaper than a fisher price toy. It also had a defect in the LCD, but that can happen to anyone on any laptop.

Thinking T40... anyone used a PowerBook 12" or 15"?

I'm in the same position you are, actually. Thinking about taking a drive to Ann Arbor in a week or so to look at a local showcase there and get some hands on with their powerbooks and their T40. I'll let you know what I think. ;)

Aye, I'm going to be buying one here pretty soon too. I also once owned a 600m, and man I can't handle that kind of crap. Luckily I too get a massive discount on the T40. ;)

Dell latop's chasis quality?

I owned a 600m for about 2 days. The keyboard flex was very tolerable in my opinion - it felt like most other laptop keyboards that I've used. Yes, it did flex a little if you REALLY pushed on it, but who needs to put 400 N of force on a keyboard while typing? As for the build quality, it was...

We have a student discount with Dell and IBM. However, I've found that using my student discount through dell somehow seems to create more expensive systems than if I had just gone through the home/home office division. It seems that when I go to check-out with my student account, they tack on...

Pentium M vs. Pentium 4

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the last time I heard, you couldn't install linux on a Pentium-M based system. It's a big deal for some, and not so much for others.

60 Deg T-Bird Too Hot?

I went through quite the ordeal a year or two ago with my 1.33 Tbird in getting it to cool down a bit. In theory, they're rated to a max of 95ºC I believe, but you definitely don't want it running near that. Many people have simply told me "if it hasn't crashed, you're cool." It really does...
