Ok, so I should say Marketing Ploy numbers :P Yes I understand that the network can actual transfer 1000 mbits/s, but there is all kinds of overhead, etc. However, no matter the overhead costs, you should still get more than a 10% utiliziation out of it. And some people here have pointed out...
Thanks OmegaXero...
What Gigabit Switch (5 port is all I need, if a good one is available, I have a TRENDnet one atm) would your recommend? Or should I bother trying to update that since 2/3 of the machines are connected via PCI Lynksys cards? The 3rd is an Intel integrated Gigabit port...
sorry, your right, the K's should be M's, /bonk self :)
As for the utilization, i'll have to check the 100Mbit on again, as I haven't used for a long time, since I switched to Gigabit.
However, on the gigabit, why is the utilization so low??
I've tried to find information on this for a long time, and thought I'd ask here (sorry if its been discussed, as i can't find where).
100Mbit network, with a 100Mbit swtich:
100Mbit = 12.5Kbytes/sec (theory)
1000Mbit/Gigabit
1000Mbit = 125Kbytes/sec (theory)
I have NEVER been able to...
I gota say, I'm in love with the prospect of dual Opterons, specially if they are as stable as you guys are claiming!
Now I just need a client to pay for it ;) cuz with everything I want its looking to be about $5,000US, which isn't too bad for a dual cpu workstation/server imo.
What you reccomend sound great, thanks. Is this the exact list of parts you have?
Also a bit of a noob question: on the Tyan board, i'm guessing that the PCI-E slots will take the a PCI-E video card, since I don't see an onboard one?
Thanks again!
I'm not a huge fan of Tyan; since I have an MPX that just been a world of trouble :( (2xRMA, and lots of other 'little' issues).
Thought I would still prefer to go AMD :-/
I'm wanting to put together a good, but not crazy, workstation/server with dual processors. I've unfortunatly not had alot of time to keep up with the latest hardware like i use to, so am looking for your "expert" opinions please.
Primary Uses:
- VMWare server for multi platform testing.
-...
Revamp a bit of what others have said, with my own experince:
If you plan on moding more cases, or whatever, then get the tools to mod it. If you don't think you'll mod after this one, then you could just get a hole cutter (which will fit on any standard drill, which most ppl have already)...
call me stupid, but don't most air condition units dehumidify (remove the moisture) from the air? So what would it be bad to have that air pushed into a tube (what you could bend to ensure that an moisture does so on the tube, then into the case? (Cool air mind you, not frigid!)
I can't see any...
If you use the Zalman like Barak and I, then you won't need a fan on the Northbridge unless your doing crazy OC'ing, which our boards won't handle very well anyways.
If you think you still need more cooling, get the Zalman case bracket and 92mm fan, which you can then have blowing accross your...
McArra: Thats some crazy looking case, and fan on your Vid card! What case is that??
Ackmed: What was wrong with your old case, that you had to go crazy on a new one? :-) Looks sweet, both of em!
I'll posted some pics once I get my camera back from my brother.
