anybody use this board? What do you think?

SkyLake is great. It is just you said you were upgrading your board. You didn't mention you were buying a new CPU and DRAM for that board. A new Skylake CPU and DDR4 and you're good to go. :)

anybody use this board? What do you think?

We're assuming that you have a SkyLake CPU and DDR4 to populate that board. It seems a bit strange that someone would be replacing a SkyLake mobo at this early stage.

    NO POST, mysterious ticking instead

It could be the motherboard, but it could also be the CPU, or the Power supply.

M.2 NVMe 4x PCI 3.0 4 GB/s SSD interface - is it here to stay?

Only the Z170 and X99 chipsets natively support M.2 @ PCIe3 x4. Some Z97 boards support M.2 PCIe3 X4, but this is not from the Z97 chipset, it uses 4x PCIe3 lanes from the CPU. Native Z97 M.2 support is only x2 PCIe2, with a max bandwidth of 1GB/s.

    ASUS Z170-AR: I don't want to OC!

If its overclocking out of the box, then the TPU switch is most likely in the ON position. Check the board and make sure the TPU switch is turned OFF.

M.2 NVMe 4x PCI 3.0 4 GB/s SSD interface - is it here to stay?

Personally I hope U.2 becomes the standard for desktop PC's. M.2 is to small, with problems with drive capacity, heat issues, and I don't see the manufacturers fitting a heat sink on M.2, as they still have to be compatible with mobile devices such as laptops' U.2 is a 2.5 inch form factor...

Running SSD via USB 3 (UASP) speeds improvable?

USAP doesn't appear to scale above a queue depth of 4, and it doesn't scale at any queue depth as well as SATA does. But even then, 35K IOPS should be more than enough for a good experience. Also, the max sequential transfer rate I've seen from USB3 was around 420 MB/s, so you're not that far...

    M.2 drives can make noise?

The M.2 SSD will be taking its power from the motherboard, so it could be some support component on the motherboard that the noise is coming from. The only way to tell is to get a replacement SSD, and see if the noise still remains.

    SAMSUNG SM950 PRO NVMe SSD

Thanks. :) As Deders mentions, go with the socket that has the best airflow. I use an Antec P280 case, which is designed for silent running rather than airflow, but in normal use, I never found the Samsung 950 Pro throttling when connected to the native Z170 M.2, or the when connected to PCIe3...

    SAMSUNG SM950 PRO NVMe SSD

The Intel 750 is technically faster, but the Samsung 950 Pro is optimized for typical consumer workloads, and is probably faster in that usage scenario. To use any NVMe SSD in Windows 7, you'll first have to inject the drivers during Windows installation. Windows 7 doesn't natively support...

    confused about m2 ssd connector

There are two different types of M.2 SSDs, in fact three now I you include NVMe. You have AHCI/SATA type, and you have PCIe type. Most desktop motherboards with an onboard M.2 slot is compatible with both types. This may not be the case with a laptop. You will need to check in your manual to...

1150/1151/2011 board with fan off function based on temp?

I should have added. You can't switch OFF the CPU fan. It only allows the case fans to be switched off. Also the correct feature is called Allow fan STOP. Here is a youtube video, if you can spare 10 mins of your life to watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt-rh-WCxlc

1150/1151/2011 board with fan off function based on temp?

Asus Z170 motherboards allow you have the fans off then switch them on when the temps rise above a certain level. You can do this from the BIOS or from the Ai Suite with Fan Expert 3. You set the feature with 'Allow fan off'

How to backup samsung 950 prp?

Macrium Reflect does the job well. Install the Samsung NVMe driver, then create a rescue media. It builds a WinPE rescue media with the required drivers, and plugins. It also supports legacy and UEFI installations, MBR and GPT partitions. There is a free edition, which may not support...

ASUS Z170 Deluxe cold boot problem

For me, yes. I had issues with 901 coming out of sleep mode. 1203 has cured that for me. If 901 is working for you, then I would stay with 901, as don't like to try and fix something that isn't broken.
