Tablet for long trip toddler

We have 2 2015 Fire tablets running AOSP 5.1.1. Picked them up from Amazon Warehouse deals for ~ $30 each. They run great and are cheap enough to where I'm not worried about accidental breakage. I'll have to borrow one and load FireOS on it to play sometime - sounds like there are some kid...

Kids Tablet?

I have 2 Nexus 7's (2013 rev) that have Poetic TurtleSkin bumper cases on them for my 2 and 4 year olds (I know, I know, but they're limited to 1 hour total screen time per day, including TV) We use wireless charging, so no worries about usb ports wearing out. Besides, they go a few days...

Looking into getting a flash

If you can afford it, I'd say get one - learn how to bounce the flash (both with and without a bounce card), and also look into a diffuser. With a little bit of practice you can take some very nice looking photos in crap light. I ended up shooting my stepsister's wedding (was only supposed to...

Free photo browsing software.

Another vote for FastStone - also has a really nice 2nd screen feature (thumbnails on primary screen, full size preview on the secondary) that makes quick culling of bad photos very easy.

Controller/Remote for a HTPC?

Harmony Smart Hub here, with a FLIRC on the Chrombox running OpenELEC (acting as my HTPC). Harmony also controls my receiver, TV, Roku, and BluRay player. Love the setup and wish I could justify a second one for upstairs.

Cleaning TV

Normal glass cleaner (or if I'm feeling snarky, Invisible Glass) with a CLEAN microfiber cloth. Spray on cloth, wipe down, then remove any haze/swirls with another CLEAN microfiber cloth. Have cleaned both of my plasmas this way for years with zero issues. It's just glass after all...

Decent inspection camera?

I bought one of the cheap USB cameras and while it provided adequate picture in normal light (ie, sitting on my desk) it was not bright enough to do anything in wall. You could only see about 6 inches and the picture was very grainy. Through sheer luck I managed to chase the cabling I needed...

Interesting you say that, because since the recent update, my Roku has been struggling with MKV playback (direct stream video, transcode audio) via Plex (both server and client) but the FireStick has been bombproof. This is with the Roku on a wired gigabit network, no less. Both can handle...

Openelec + chromebox, works on one tv but not the other

Not sure if you've tried it, but have you switched out HDMI cables? I spent a few days debugging something similar and it turned out to be a bad cable (brand new out of the bag, but still bad). Also, if you have Redmere cables, try a standard one.

Suggest some one-touch universal remotes

Another vote for the Smart Hub. One thing to note - every button can be programmed for both a long and a short press, so you can program 6 activities, not 3. And I think you can create even more an access them through a smartphone... Regardless, love it, and the included remote is extremely...

Which software and video format seems to be the most compatible across devices

I use MKV container with H264 encoding under the covers and that plays through Plex on a Roku 2 and 3 (Plex client), FireTV stick (Plex client and XBMC), and an OpenElec Chrombox (Kodi). I only have to transcode audio to the Roku/FireTV clients as those are directly connected to the display...

Lollipop thread (Android 5.0)

We have 3 devices (Nexus 4/5) on TMobile and 1 on AT&T, all on 5.0 or 5.0.1 and no issues whatsoever. When the 5 Moto G's (3 first gen, 2 2nd gen) get Lollipop I'll try to report back.
