Compared to the good old days, CPUs and especially GPUs overclock themselves now according to manufacturer power and temperature limits. Manual overclocking is mostly just pushing these limits more.
I just replaced my desktop system's i7 2600k with a bottom-end i5 9400f, specifically so that...
I have a Core 2 Duo (well, actually Pentium Dual-Core) system in daily use, hooked up to a Sony Trinitron CRT TV for watching YouTube, Kodi and retro-game emulation. Plenty fast enough for 480p.
That's good to hear. I had people telling me that an unsupported CPU would straight up not work and you'd need to have a supported CPU just to do the bios update (including various sales staff.) I know I remember doing bios updates for CPU compatibility with the problem CPU installed back in...
Yeah, I realise that a 200mhz bump wouldn't mean much, but if it's there for free I'll take it. I'm really happy with the 9400f system I just built (replaced a heavily OC'ed 2600k at last that was sort of dying on me) - good performance with no fuss for not much money. I was also considering the...
No, no interesting options in the bios. Not a big deal, but I'd take free extra performance if there was any on offer.
Is multi core enhancement just an Asus thing or do other manufacturers do it too? (My board is ASRock)
This is pretty much what I usually do. Windows 10 will race you in the background and install some old default drivers while you're trying to install the latest ones, but it doesn't usually cause trouble.
Larry - did you get around to trying this tweak? I just built a 9400f system with a B365 board and saw this thread yesterday.
I haven't actually used XTU before. I installed it but didn't find many buttons to tweak with the 9400f. There was some kind of switch in the turbo settings - in one...
They are what they are, and "better" is in the eye of the beholder. Why do people drive classic cars from 50 years ago when modern cars are faster and more efficient? A combination of nostalgia and personal preference I suppose.
Thanks. I think you imagined the AGP part. "Newest" video card I've found with s-video output to drive my Trinitron is a GTS 250, which has Windows 10 x64 drivers. Not decided if it's up to the job of Dolphin yet, but it would only need to run at native resolution. Exploring softmodded Wii as an...
Are modern motherboards all UEFI only now? I have a project in mind that needs some modern CPU grunt but needs to use an older graphics card for old-fashioned TV-out purposes. I've read that older PCIe cards from the pre-UEFI days require a motherboard using an old-fashioned BIOS and won't work...
In the PS2/XBox era, D&D Heroes (XBox only) was similar to Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and very good. The Hunter:The Reckoning games (there are about 3 I think) for PS2 and XBox were similar with a modern day vampres/werewolves setting and also pretty fun.
Looking for some opinions on an upgrade. Our eldest just bought Ark: Survival Evolved and then complained that it didn't run well - an excellent sympathy strategy for getting upgraded. They've been struggling with old hardware for a while but didn't run anything demanding before. I've looked at...
